Review
When I was a teenager I was enamored of the Days of Our Lives. You remember, the soap opera extraordinaire in which love affairs, secret deals and heartbreaking romances are served up in daily hour long segments? I watched that show for years and loved it.
Then I watched an episode as an adult and was far less impressed. Why? The characters were pretty much the same (some were even played by the same actors), the plot line had continued, the thrills, chills and intrigue were all there, just as they had been before. The only way I can explain it is that I had changed. There was nothing wrong with the show, but I was different and it was no longer my cup of cinematic tea.
When Empires Fall by Katie Jennings made me think fondly of Days of Our Lives. It has all the hallmarks of a really good soap. Deeply driven characters, fantastic settings, star crossed lovers, passion/hatred and a super-rich protagonist whose empire is endangered by a mysterious secret that isn't even his. Plot twists abound, but each one is logical and well presented. There's even an adorably spunky female heroine trying to make her way in the world. (She was my favorite character.)
For anyone who enjoys this genre, you will probably love When Empires Fall and the entire Vassar Legacy Series. It is a hot blooded read with interesting characters and an engaging plot.

When Empires Fall A Vasser Legacy Novel Katie Jennings 9780615673530 Books Reviews
‘When Empires Fall’ is the opulent and glamorous start to the Vasser Legacy series.
It focuses on a powerful, wealthy family known as the Vassers who run a hotel empire. It is a dramatic novel filled with fascinating characters that explores the minds of elite and the troubled. The reader gets an inside look into the heads of the three youngest, most prominent Vassers, siblings Grant, Linc, and Madison, as their legacy is stained by murder and treachery. A charged set of romances pervade the book and each of them will leave you yearning for more.
The development of the characters is the most gripping part of the book. Watching steadfast Grant come slowly undone, seeing Madison grow ever fiercer, and weathering Linc’s mood swings are all part of the fun. The language is colorful and precise and delivers a clear picture of the environment and the people in it. It is perhaps the most sensory of Jennings’ novels, alive with striking images and sounds.
Like her other novels, it is largely a character piece that offers a detailed, elaborate, and emotive view into the heads of so many interesting people. Each of their personalities is so distinct and so endearing that the pages will flow by. Becoming attached to characters is more of an imperative rather than an option. They are a beautifully flawed, enduring set of people.
The plot is evenly paced and takes its time to unfold, a process that is deeply satisfying. By the end of the book, the reader will know that much is to come in the sequel. I feel that this book has set a rich, elegant stage for some shocking events to come. I, for one, cannot wait to find out what they are
I am somewhat torn regarding When Empires Fall. On the positive side, it was a fairly enjoyable, larger than life, completely unbelievable (in an escapist way), soap opera-ish family saga. I certainly didn't lose interest in the story as the pages turned, although I will admit to rolling my eyes more than once. A bit of escapist drama with over the top characters that were at least interesting.
On the negative side, there was very little subtlety in the story telling. This was due to the author's attempt at an omniscient narrator. The head jumping point of view shifts meant the reader was never in any doubt as to what any character was feeling or thinking. This constant shifting of point of view may also have been the reason why some people have commented that they felt there were too many characters. It wasn't the number of characters so much as the point of view shifts. At times this led to momentary confusion as to who was speaking or thinking. I would have preferred to see the focus on a few key characters only, which would have allowed the author the way to build a stronger, more intense story.
Having said that, I didn't dislike the story and will probably read the second book in the series to wrap things up. The author has loads of potential, and as the overwhelming majority of reviews show, her storytelling hit the mark with many readers (who aren't looking too critically at the structure of the story or believability of the characters).
With a complex cast of characters, When Empires Fall is a novel set in the landscape of New York City surrounding the vast empires of the rich and famous of New York society. The Vassar Hotel chain, a century old conglomerate, is ruled by one man, a ruthless no nonsense character even at 90 years of age. His puppet grandchildren have each been placed in a position of power as long as they do his bidding. But secrets surface when Rosalie's niece begins to clean the dead woman's house out after her death. She discovers that Rosalie was once a mistress to the deceased father of 90 year old Cyrus and has kept his secrets to herself all these years. But she kept everything in a file that once discovered cannot be left hidden any longer. Siblings Grant, Lincoln, and Madison Vassar are the chosen grandchildren and they are in for the ride of their life with love interests Quinn, Lynette, and Wyatt. Intrigue tangles with romance in this must read novel by Katie Jennings.
